My audio review of Inception

// July 18th, 2010 // View Comments // Movies

I recorded my audio review with a social network service called cinchcast. This service allows me to record audio messages by calling in their phone number,recording via their iphone app, or via my PC. I can then share the posts with twitter, facebook, or embedding it in a blog post like I did below. Well the review itself is pretty spoiler free. I do agree with firstshowing.net that this “IS the movie event of the summer.” I really can’t wait to get a second viewing just to make sure I didn’t miss anything. There’s a lot of speculation as to what happened in the ending. I’d love to hear your thoughts in the comments.

Upcoming Foreign Films I Wanna See

// July 7th, 2010 // View Comments // Movies

These are a list of six foreign films that peaked my interest from the trailers I’ve found around the net. Some of the movies are coming to the US soon and some are uncertain. These movies run the gammit of my taste from the violent horror flicks to black comedy action to campy asian kung fu.  Keep reading to see the full list.

Boomtown Film and Music Festival Beaumont Texas 2010

Went to my first Boomtown Film & Music Festival, held here in Beaumont, Texas a few weekends back. It was a two day event held on May 21 & 22. The event featured live music, independent films, movie industry panels, and parties. I wasn’t able to see of the events. I was more interested in the films. It’s good to see some culture making its way to my new fair city of Beaumont. It was the closest thing we have to something I took for granted in Dallas which was an independent movie theater like the Angelika or Magnolia.

THE SHORTS

I didn’t get to watch too many films since I didn’t get to the event until the middle of the second day. The films I did see were pretty good for low-budget films. I got to three films in the Crime Shorts category: Sawed-Off, Accidental Art, and Internal Affairs. Of the three, Internal Affairs was the most ambitious but it was the longest at 40 minutes. The other amazing thing was that it was directed by a group of high school students. Below are trailers to Accidental Art and Internal Affairs:

FEATURE FILM

boomtown film and music festival

The one film I did see that blew me away, had to be The Scientist. Here is a synopsis for the film:

THE SCIENTIST follows a brilliant physicist, Dr. Marcus Ryan (Bill Sage), who anguishes over the tragic death of his wife and daughter while secretly constructing a mysterious energy generator in his basement. The multi—dimensional energy unleashed by the machine triggers a series of events that propels Ryan toward a higher level of consciousness.

This was a great independent scifi film in the vain of another independent film called Primer. I love films like this that are thought provoking and interesting without a huge budget. Watch the preview below for a test of the film. Here is a great review from Michael C. Moore of KitsapSun.com.

What I experienced at the festival I enjoyed. Next year I will be sure to attend more and give everyone a more in-depth review. Next year I’ll be sure and make it to the music and parties as well.

Kick-Ass Looks Awesome but not for Kids

// April 15th, 2010 // View Comments // Movies

Kick-Ass starts tomorrow but just wanted to voice a little warning about the nature of this movie. No I haven’t seen the movie yet, but this is my observation after watching the Red Band trailer that was released back in February. If you haven’t seen the trailer yet, I have it embedded below.  This comic book based movie is definitely one for adults. Yes it stars a cute 12 year old girl, but this girl does some pretty gruesome stuff like chopping up people’s legs with a katana blade and shoots a couple of bad guys execution style to the head. There are a couple of sexual references too. I have a few screen grabs below to illustrate my point. This isn’t the first Rated R comic book movie and I’m sure it won’t be the last.

Now that we got that out of the way, as an Adult, I can’t wait to see this movie! From what I’ve been reading, the movie like 300 and Watchmen is a close representation of the source material. I don’t understand why the studios feel they have to alter the movie so much, it loses what made it great in the first place. I have only read the first issue of the Kick-Ass comic but I commend directors/screenwriters who honor the source material. I will definitely be seeing this movie ASAP.

Resident Evil: Afterlife Trailer Observations

// April 4th, 2010 // View Comments // Movies

After watching the latest trailer for Resident Evil: Afterlife. Here are some key features I picked up on:

As you can see alot of borrowed tricks in this movie and the same Milla kicking zombie ass. Its a fun creezy popcorn flick and thats all its been.  Here’s hoping this is the final Resident Evil. I enjoyed the first three films but there isn’t anywhere left to go but possibly space. Am I going to see it? Probably, just to see Milla in 3D of course ^_^

If you haven’t seen the trailer, here it is in all its splendor:
