Well its that time in a Operating System’s life cycle. The dreaded format and reinstall of Windows. I have been fearing this for a couple of months. Just like vehicles, your Operating System gets sluggish after a while and needs a refresher.

I’ve had Windows XP installed for 4+ years and now windows starts very slowly and just recently started randomly giving me BSOD and rebooting. The fun part of backing up all my important documents, media, software, etc. onto an external drive and praying that I got everything is the next step. This is sort of good in a way because i get to sift through all of crap and delete what I really don’t need or haven’t used in a long time. It’s spring cleaning for the computer.

This makes me think about the push to Cloud Computing or Client Server computing and wonder if that is the way to go.

<img src="http://bryansays.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2008/07/betasign.png" alt="" title="betasign" width="300" height="300" align="right" size-medium wp-image-181" />Read this great articleby Mashable concerning the growning trend with software development companies to release very “buggy” software and passing it off as beta, when in fact they should be marked as Alpha. The author talks about Microsoft and Google with their Gmail service which should have the Beta tag removed.

Working for a software company, I see our software move through the development cycle and we would not release Alpha software for any kind of public consumption. Alpha releases are purely for our testers to test the software in-house. Only after much testing do we give software out to beta customers.
