Tekken the Movie … Why?

// February 19th, 2010 // Comments // Gaming, Movies

I don’t get it. Has Hollywood not learned from past failures in this genre that video game movie adaptations (VGMA) are a losing battle? I think the producers automatically think of the movies that did good like Lara Croft or Mortal Combat but those movies are few and far between. They forget about train wrecks like Double Dragon, Super Mario Brothers, and Doom.

For the fighting game genre of VGMA there are even fewer movies that made any money. The last one to come out was Street Fighter: The Legend of Chun-Li which grossed a tiny $8Million in the box office. DOA:Dead or Alive was even smaller with $480K. My speculation is the movie studios know they can cast no name actors cheap for these types of movies and they have a built-in audience from the video games. The problem is the audience will only take so much of these piss poor representations of their beloved video games before they won’t go at all.

I for one will probably skip Tekken when it comes out. I wasn’t much of a fan of the video game. I was more into Street Fighter and Virtua Fighter growing up. If Tekken sounds good to you, check out the trailer below:

2009: The Movies in 4 Minutes

// January 4th, 2010 // Comments // Movies

I saw this compilation on the Redbox Blog and had to share. It’s a montage of clips from 2009 set to Radiohead’s appropriately titled “Exit Music (For A Film).

If you liked that video, check out Matthew Shapiro’s past Cinescapes:

Free Instant Christmas Movies

// December 23rd, 2009 // Comments // Movies

Well the movies are free if you have a Netflix account. I was perusing InstantWatcher.com and found these Christmas movies available free during the holiday season:

Christmas Story Black Christmas P2
AOL ranked the film their #1 Christmas movie of all time in 2007. An instant classic that is staple on TBS during Christmas Day but now you watch it commercial-free through your XBOX,PS3,PC,Roku Box, etc. Another movie from Bob Clark comes a different Christmas classic that’s a staple in our household. Before there was Halloween this was one of the scariest movies around. Can you tell I like horror movies? This is a lesser known movie that has Christmas as backdrop but it is sure to entertain if you’re a horror film buff.

Redbox has the Service!

// December 18th, 2009 // Comments // Blog, Movies

redboxservice

Redbox has the competition beat when it comes to DVD rental prices but another aspect I love about them is their customer service.  I had a craving for a movie tonight and this time around is what Harry Potter and the Half Blood Prince. I go to redbox’s site to reserve a copy. I hop in the car to my nearest Redbox.

I get there and notice a line is formed three people deep. It seems that there’s a problem with machine and its not letting anyone rent a DVD. Dohh! This sucks for me double time! Whenever you reserve a movie from online, your credit card is automatically debited one night’s rental. Driving to another redbox and renting the same movie will not remove the reservation charge on that machine.  I automatically give their customer service a call and explain what happened. The operator says no problem and apologizes for the machine issue. He lets me know the one dollar fee to my credit card can’t be reversed but he does give me two promo codes for the trouble! WOW you can’t beat customer service like this.

This is the second time I’m experienced this. The first time I was just calling to let them know their machine had a DVD stuck in the slot. They thanked me for letting me know there was a problem and gave me a promo code for my troubles. This is great customer service on their part but it baffles me that they can afford to give away free promo codes on such a low-margin business. I’m guessing they need to save all the customers they can to keep people coming back. All I can say is kudos redbox and now can you fix all the slow asses who take forever making a movie choice. :)

Southland Tales Mini Review

// August 16th, 2009 // Comments // Movies

Ok that was a spectacular crapfest of a movie! I think that has got to be one the worst movies I have seen in a long while. I bet all the actors in this were thinking “oh he directed Donnie Darko, this is gonna be great!” This movie is incoherent from start to finish with a few glimmers of brilliance in between (JT scene with the killers in the background). Someone needs to help Richard Kelly funnel his madness into something digestible by the viewing audience.

Eden Lake Movie Review

// August 14th, 2009 // Comments // Movies

eden-lake-3
I was shocked that I liked this British horror/suspense/thriller. I’m not sure what to call it. Its not your conventional horror film but it was tastefully done and started and ended right. It started slow then went ballistic towards the end. Its the type of movie that will leave you on the edge of your seat. It does have its fair share of “torture porn” scenes a la Hostel but its not every scene in the movie. The torque scenes are placed there to evoke a reaction to the audience and it does that in spades.

The movie starts out with a couple, Jenny (Kelly Reilly) and Steve (Michael Fassbender) off on holiday (so the brits call it) to go camping down by Eden Lake which is converted lake from a mining quarry. While there the couple has a run in with some unruly young hooligan kids and it just turns down hill from there. The movie is a case of wrong place, wrong time, and the worst circumstances. I have never seen a bunch of kids as ruthless and nasty as this bunch. This movie will shock you. I felt physically drained after watching this film. Overall I would give it an 8/10. I’m interested in hearing your reaction to the movie. Leave me a comment and tell me what you think.
